Types of Soil

  • Screened Topsoil has been run through a screener that removes debris/sticks larger than 1”.  All screened top soil will still have small pieces of rock/debris/sticks because the screener can’t remove it all and all top soil in Alabama has small rock.
  • Unscreened Topsoil is the top layer of soil on the ground full of nutrients for plantings.    Top Soil will have rocks/debris/small sticks as it is dug up off the ground.
  • Fill Dirt is the next layer of soil under top soil.   It is generally used for filling in holes or for leveling the ground prior to applying top soil.  Fill Dirt is not nutrient based and will not grow any type of plant.
  • Soil Mix for raised garden/flower beds or for general garden planting use. Consists of screened top soil, organic (wood based) compost, and coarse sand. This nutrient filled mixture helps with moisture retention, yets allows good drainage.
  • Sand Mix consists of screened top soil and coarse sand.  This mixture is a favorite of many landscapers to lay sod/grass.
  • Soil Conditioner is added to existing top soil to repair and help maintain the soil quality. Over time the soil will become compacted and have less air space for roots to function. Soil conditioners help to loosen compacted soils as well as replenish and maintain nutrients for the plants to flourish.
